Finding the best dog walking wellies depends on where you walk, how far you go and how much support you want from your boots. A heavy-duty welly with a substantial sole can be a good choice for rough, muddy ground, but it may be unnecessary if most of your walks are around the local park or along the beach.

Best for Rough Ground and Long Dog Walks: Hoggs of Fife Field Sport Neoprene Wellies
For dog walkers regularly covering rough or muddy ground, the Hoggs of Fife Field Sport Neoprene Lined Wellington Boots are one of the first pairs we tend to recommend.
They are a substantial welly, which often appeals to customers who want plenty of support rather than a particularly light boot.
The main reason we recommend them for serious walking is the Vibram outsole. It gives you good traction on muddy and uneven ground and is designed to cope with plenty of use. Our view
Choose the Field Sport if you regularly walk over muddy fields, tracks, woodland or rough ground and want a supportive welly with plenty of grip.

Best for Everyday Dog Walks: Grisport Stream Neoprene Wellies
If most of your dog walks involve the local park, lanes, easier paths or the beach, you probably don't need a heavy-duty field welly.

Do You Need Neoprene Wellies for Dog Walking?
For much of the British dog-walking year, we think neoprene lining makes sense.
Neoprene adds insulation and makes a rubber boot feel warmer and more comfortable during cold, wet walks. That's particularly useful during autumn and winter or if you're outside for long periods.
There is a downside.
During genuinely hot summer weather, neoprene-lined wellies can be warmer than you need.
In practice, this isn't usually much of a problem. During very hot and dry weather, many people aren't wearing wellies anyway because the ground isn't muddy.
If you want a welly that you can use throughout the year and you don't particularly need extra insulation, a cotton-lined alternative such as the Hoggs of Fife Field Sport 365 may make more sense.
What Should You Look for in Dog Walking Wellies?
Grip
Grip should be high on your list if you regularly walk across mud, wet grass, woodland or uneven tracks.
Look at the sole rather than judging a welly purely by its upper. Deep tread and a sole designed for traction can make a noticeable difference on slippery ground.

Support
Think about how far you actually walk.

They can be, but choose the right pair.
Wellies can be suitable for longer dog walks, particularly when the ground is wet or muddy, but you need to choose the right pair. For regular longer distances, look for good cushioning, support, secure fit and a grippy outsole. On drier ground or established trails, a walking boot may be the better choice.
For frequent long walks over rough ground, we'd favour something like the Hoggs of Fife Field Sport.
For less demanding walks where you still want warmth and protection, a lighter option such as the Grisport Stream may be preferable.
Looking After Your Dog Walking Wellies
Dog walking can be particularly hard on Wellington boots. Mud, repeated wetting and drying, and salt water from beach walks all take their toll on natural rubber.

- Store them away from strong sunlight and heat.

There isn't one pair of best dog walking wellies for everyone.
If you're regularly covering miles of rough, muddy countryside, we'd choose the Hoggs of Fife Field Sport Neoprene for its support, warmth and Vibram outsole.
If you still need a sturdy neoprene-lined boot but prefer something less substantial, look at the Percussion Sologne or Rambouillet.
For everyday park walks, easier paths and trips to the beach, the Grisport Stream is often all the boot you need.
The main thing is to buy for the type of walking you actually do rather than paying for a heavier boot simply because it has a longer specification list.
