Bodywarmer or Gilet? What's really the best?

Posted by Bethan Bithell on 12th Sep 2015

Are you looking for that extra layer of clothing that will offer you extra warmth whilst at the same time being really practical but not sure whether a bodywarmer or gilet would be best? But, just what is the difference between these three garments? Well, to be honest, very little really!

The phrases ‘bodywarmer’, ‘gilet’ and ‘waistcoat’ are interchangeable, with many outdoor enthusiasts using any of these terms to describe a sleeveless jacket. There are however some slight differences between the three, as outlined below:

1. A bodywarmer is classed as an outdoor sleeveless garment that is padded, with its main purpose being to provide warmth.

2. A gilet (a french term) is a lighter sleeveless garment, which is perfect as a layer under a jacket. Gilets’ offer extra warmth without being restrictive!

3. A waistcoat is often described as ‘the third piece of a suit’! (eg part of a matching tweed suit consisting of a jacket, breeks and waistcoat).

No matter what you’re looking for, whether it be a shooting gilet, a walking body warmer or, alternatively, a waistcoat, you’ll find that the guide below outlines our key best sellers.

Waistcoat, Bodywarmer or Gilet?

shooting waistcoat or ‘gilet’ needs to provide warmth without being too restrictive!

Remember that keeping your body warm will ensure your concentration when you’re staying out for longer! No matter how formal your shooting event is, our collection of shooting waistcoats will not disappoint. They have been designed to include many features that you’ll probably need for shooting, such as large bellowed pockets and handwarmer pockets.

However, a ‘walking’ bodywarmer or gilet needs to keep your core body region warm, whilst at the same time helping to draw moisture. This, in turn, prevents over heating!

Below is a collection of our top selling garments:
