Bamboo base layers and other materials | Outdoor Wear

Posted by Bethan Bithell on 5th Mar 2013

A baselayer is the layer which lies against the skin. This layer is designed to trap a thin layer of warm air against the skin and wick away (draw moisture) moisture from the body.

We currently stock two types of base layer – bamboo and polyester.

What is bamboo base layer fabric?

Bamboo fabric is fabric made from bamboo grass. This natural fabric has become extremely popular due to its unique properties. This fabric is light and strong, wicks away moisture and is antibacterial.

A Bamboo base layer have many benefits for you and for the environment.

Allergic to wool or hemp?

If you have allergic reactions to other natural fibres such as wool or hemp then try bamboo. Research has shown that many people who have experienced some allergic reactions to other natural fabrics do not complain about bamboo. This could be due to the naturally smooth fabric which means there are no irritating spurs to aggravate the skin.

Benefits to you of Bamboo Baselayers

Bamboo baselayers are extremely soft, smooth and comfortable to wear. Other benefits include:

  • Moisture wicking properties which will keep you dry
  • Breathable and therefore thermo-control
  • Antibacterial
  • Anti-static
  • UV protection – cuts out up to 98% of harmful UV rays
  • Anti-fungal
  • Ideal for problem skin due to the softness of the fabric

Bamboo baselayers are ideal for all types of sports. Whether skiing in the Alps, walking Snowdonia, walking the dog or working in the garden, then baselayers are sure to keep you dry and warm.

Polyester baselayers

Polyester baselayers are lightweight and warm and have similar benefits to bamboo, but are not as effective at resisting odours.

Avoid cotton baselayers. Cotton holds sweat, and gets heavy. Wet baselayers could result in hypothermia even in mild conditions.

When buying baselayers, always make sure the layer is tight against the skin as it should act as a second layer.

Why baselayers are so important:

  • Wicks moisture away from the body
  • Fast drying
  • Controls body temperature

If you find yourself out in windy, cold conditions, the correct baselayer could potential save your life!

Baselayer care

Due to the wicking properties of baselayers, avoid using fabric softeners and detergents. Such chemicals will remove the protective coatings found in baselayers.

For best results, hand wash using a specific base layer cleaner.
